Senior Payments Engineer — Acquiring & Payment Processing

Jobgether · India

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Payments Engineer — Acquiring & Payment Processing based in India.

This is a high-impact senior engineering role at the core of a modern fintech payments ecosystem, focused on building and scaling acquiring and payment-processing infrastructure.
You will design and operate backend systems that power authorization, settlement, reconciliation, refunds, and dispute flows at scale.
The role involves deep collaboration with Product, Risk, Compliance, and Engineering teams to ensure resilient and compliant money movement.
You will work on integrating with global payment processors and gateways, ensuring reliability, observability, and financial accuracy.
This is a backend-heavy, ownership-driven environment where engineering excellence directly impacts transaction success and customer experience.
You will also contribute to mentoring peers and elevating system-wide engineering standards within a fast-moving, AI-augmented engineering culture.

Accountabilities:

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services (primarily in Go) that integrate with payment processors, gateways, and acquiring partners, ensuring scalable and reliable transaction flows.
  • Own end-to-end payment lifecycle systems including authorization, capture, settlement, reconciliation, refunds, chargebacks, and dispute handling.
  • Architect fault-tolerant and idempotent distributed systems using patterns such as transactional outbox, queues (Kafka/SQS/RabbitMQ), and event-driven workflows.
  • Ensure PCI DSS-compliant engineering practices including secure handling of payment data, tokenization, 3DS/SCA flows, and financial auditability.
  • Monitor, instrument, and optimize payment system performance including latency, approval rates, processor reliability, and settlement accuracy.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (Product, Risk, Compliance, Support) to solve complex payments and money-movement challenges.
  • Mentor engineers, contribute to technical leadership, and help drive engineering best practices across teams.
  • Use AI tools (e.g., LLM-based assistants) responsibly to accelerate design, development, testing, and documentation within secure engineering boundaries.
  • Requirements:

    • 7+ years of backend or full-stack engineering experience, with strong exposure to fintech, payments, or money-movement systems.
    • Strong proficiency in Go (preferred) or equivalent experience in Python or similar backend languages, building scalable RESTful APIs.
    • Hands-on experience with payment processors, gateways, or acquiring systems, and strong understanding of core payments concepts (authorization, settlement, tokenization, idempotency, reconciliation, disputes).
    • Experience building distributed systems using event-driven architectures, queues, and reliability patterns in cloud environments.
    • Strong understanding of observability and production systems (e.g., logging, metrics, tracing, alerting tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, or New Relic).
    • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, containerized microservices, and cloud platforms (preferably AWS and Kubernetes).
    • Familiarity with relational databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL) and ORM-based data access patterns.
    • Demonstrated ability to leverage AI tools (such as LLM assistants) as part of daily engineering workflows to improve productivity and output quality.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
    • Strong communication, ownership mindset, and ability to operate in high-responsibility, fast-paced environments.
    • Benefits:

      • Competitive gross salary range of $5,000 – $9,500 USD/month, depending on experience and seniority.
      • Fully remote working model with flexibility and autonomy.
      • Opportunity to work on large-scale, high-transaction financial systems with real-world impact.
      • Exposure to cutting-edge fintech infrastructure and AI-augmented engineering practices.
      • Strong technical ownership and opportunities for leadership and mentorship.
      • Collaborative, high-performance engineering culture focused on continuous improvement.
      • Comprehensive benefits package including healthcare and other regionally competitive perks (as applicable).
